Easy, homemade salt and pepper chips

Want to make a takeaway staple at home? Try these SUPER easy but oh so tasty salt and pepper chips and I promise, you will never order them from a takeaway again!

I use frozen oven chips (yes, really!) to make this dish less faffy and easy to do on a Saturday night, so you’re not tempted to pick up the phone. You can of course make homemade chips if you really want to impress with this, however frozen chips work so well in a hurry.

Try serving alongside some homemade lemon chicken or chilli chicken for a real homemade Chinese treat – yum!

Recipe (serves 4)

1 bag (950g) of frozen chips

1 white onion, chopped into chunks

1 red chilli, slices

3 spring onions, sliced

3 cloves of garlic, minced

1 tbsp vegetable oil

1 tsp 5 spice powder

1 tsp sugar

1/2 tsp table salt or 1 tsp of sea salt flakes

1 tsp freshly ground black pepper

1 pinch of chilli flakes

Cook your chips in the oven until crispy (I do them for 50 minutes at 200c, turning halfway) – or just follow the instructions!

While the chips cook, prep the rest of the ingredients. In a little bowl, mix the 5 spice powder, sugar, salt, pepper and chilli flakes.

When the chips are a few minutes away of being cooked, heat a large frying pan with the oil until hot. Add in the onion chunks, chilli, spring onion and garlic and stir until fragrant and it starts to char on the edges. Add in the oven chips and stir well to coat in the fragrant veggies. Next, tip in the spice mix and toss until all the chips are coated.

Serve straight away along side your favourite homemade Chinese dish! Easy peasy and so yum!
